Pet shops sell nail cutters for rabbits and other animals, they're not very expensive so you could ask in there :].

You don't want to cut the quick, which is the vein in the nail. You can see this unless your bunny has black nails. Cutting the quick isn't pleasant for a bunny, usually it will bleed and it feels like if you were to accidentally cut your finger while trimming your nails. So it isn't an unbearable pain but it's something you should avoid.

I was too scared to cut my rabbits nails so I took her to the vet and they showed me how. It can take a bit of getting used to and usually the rabbit won't want it to be done. Most rabbits hate their feet being touched, but if you touch them each day they'll get used to it. It's good to have two people, one to hold the rabbit and the other to do the trimming.

You do need to cut the nails though, in the wild rabbits are running about and the ground trims them for them so to speak, but not our pets!

Good luck, you'll get it, just be patient with your bunny and pat them/talk to them while you're doing it to reassure them. They have 18 claws in total!Help me with my rabbit's nail problem?
Yes, you should trim your rabbit's nails if they get too long.

The natural way is to allow your rabbit to dig.

If you need to use clippers (dog type) to shorten your rabbit's nails then locate the vein that runs up the middle of the nail. Do NOT cut this, leave the nails a little longer than the vein.

If you can't see the vein because the nails are black. Look at the underside of the nail, there is a V in the bottom of the nail, where the nail is ';hollow';, cut the nail at least 2mm longer than this V. If the nails are excessively long (curling) then reduce the length by 5mm progressively over time (several weeks), to allow the vein and nerves to shrink back in the nail.

If you do cut the vein, this will bleed profusely. If you don't have a styptic pencil to halt the bleeding, apply pressure until the bleeding stops.
While any small pet nail clipper will do, there are nail clippers on the market designed specifically for rabbits. Check out the link for rabbit nail care products. It's important for your rabbit's health to have his nails at the proper length, so look into getting a quality rabbit nail trimmer.
You can use the nail clippers that you use for yourself as long as the rabbit isn't one of the giant breeds. They would need a dog nail clippers.

Cut to just before the quick. if you do cut it too short you can hold some flour on the nail and that will stop the bleeding.

The rabbit will not bleed to death if you do acidentally cut it too short.
